Carhartt, in the US, is primarily worn by blue-collar workers, construction workers, and the like. You have to search to find a dealer, and once you do they probably won't stock any jackets at least; you'll have to order it on faith. I did and I'm very happy. It is like the one pictured (left) except all black. The thing is warm and tough, two important features for Sarajevo. I also got some Carhartt jeans, but be careful--the place I was at only had one pair that were made in the US...they have moved most of their jeans production to Mexico. The jeans are really fantastic too, though.

All of that was going to wait until the activism/intelligent consumption page went up sometime this summer, but it is all backstory for this:

Carhartt Europe

Steve sent me an email regarding my original post and was like, "Oh, yeah, Carhartt is a big brand over here," ...skaters and club kids and all that. I was like, "GET OUT!" It's still hard to believe...but somehow folks over in Europe turned the whole non-brand into a huge-brand. Not at all what I was going for--I was more attracted by the idea of it being a blue-collar non-brand than I am by the fact that it is a big brand in my favorite continent...but I guess this proves I'm a European at heart--I know what's cool without even trying! Ha ha.

Only problem--since the two Carhartt divisions are SO seperate, are the Carhartt clothes you buy in Europe made in decent conditions or are they made in China or one of 100 Pacific islands where no-one cares about workers? Steve did some field research for me in London, and the tags did not indicate place of manufacture! This is something I have never encountered in the US, and now I'm wondering if this is a law in the US, that you must indicate where a garment was made. He also pointed me to this guardian article about human rights violations in US territories...although I have seen tags indicating territories (as opposed to just "made in the US" it says "made in the US {insert territory name here}") and have stayed clear of them as much as possible.

So the verdict is still out on Carhartt Europe; but for those in the US, if you want some clear-conscience jeans or jackets check out the Carhartt site and find a dealer near you. Just check the tag!!!

See also: Red Wings, the made-in-USA boots that I got; really like them too!

Campers (english site), made-in-Spain (last time I checked) shoes that I also have and really like!

More non-sweatshop brands to come when I get that activism page done...</dc:description><dc:identifier>50</dc:identifier><dc:subject>Comment</dc:subject>

<swim:publish>publish</swim:publish>

<dc:title/><dc:description>
I'd like to sit
Cold, actually...it was in Seattle.

</dc:description><dc:identifier>30</dc:identifier><dc:subject>Elsewhere</dc:subject>

<swim:publish>publish</swim:publish>

<dc:title/><dc:description>Repros: Photographs by Sylvia Plachy this is the mother of the actor who played the main character in The Pianist. i think the person with spiky hair is he.

</dc:description><dc:identifier>29</dc:identifier><dc:subject>Links</dc:subject>

<swim:publish>publish</swim:publish>

<dc:title/><dc:description>the "War on Iraq" IQ Test

</dc:description><dc:identifier>28</dc:identifier><dc:subject>Links</dc:subject>

<swim:publish>publish</swim:publish>

<dc:title/><dc:description>Orion Magazine > David James Duncan on the post-9/11 struggle to teach creative writing
Anyway, today I decided I wanted a SWM bookmarklet. So I copied Blogger's, tweaked it a tad, created an abridged create form from the current SWM standard one, and wala, I have a bookmarklet. Thank you Blogger.
As you might know, it snowed a little bit yesterday. Not too much in the end, despite my complaining, and it did not snow overnight and it is not snowing now as the weatherpeople had sternly warned. There were plenty of people on the road driving to their surburban home from their city job last night, but not many found the courage of spirit to then make it out to a humble and god-breathed performance in a venue just a little too clean and a little too big to contain the few dusty souls that gathered to bask in the glow...

Those who did not know of this man were pleasantly surprised, enraptured with the ease with which Tom captured our ears in such a short time.

Alas, the time was short, much too short, for we could have sat much longer, eyes closed, the angels attending to our pores, Jesus surely sitting right there, present on an evening when so many would not make the effort...

We sat and talked afterward with Tom and our new friend Blaine, who drove an hour to come to the show. That Tom opened for the headlining band was a farce, they playing too loudly for us, sitting way in the back at the tables by the coffee bar, to really hear each other well. It was almost bizarre to be sitting there with him on that cold night in a near-empty coffee joint with cheesy pop music blaring...if Over the Rhine is like a special club, Tom the most sickenly sweet secret that you want to share with everyone...

I really would have preferred to be in the loft of Common Grounds, who dissed us like a last second prom date, or maybe at least our apartment, all sitting on the floor (since we have no couch), listening and talking softly...

Tom's take from last night was, in his words and no doubt accurate if even exaggerated, was enough to pay for the gas it took to divert from I-95. (He's on his way to a tour of the southern states, starting in Georgia. He should be in South Carolina right now, in fact. He got on the road as we said goodbye after evening's end.)

We gave him a token amount of money, not even enough to make up for what he should have made at the show, maybe enough to pay for the gas to South Carolina. Tom makes me wish I was independently wealthy, so I could finance his art indefinitely, make him famous, the next Bono but without the pretension. But then I realize that doesn't have to do with anything that matters, that it wouldn't make Tom happier or enrich his art or our experience...Tom has been blessed, and blesses us, with things not made of this earth, of a transcendence known to only so few...
