That Sunday, the first celebration was at his church. Two of the verses for that day really hit home with me.

Isaiah 50:4-10

The Sovereign Lord has given me an instructed tongue, to know the word that sustains the weary. He wakens me morning by morning, wakens my ear to listen like one being taught. The Sovereign Lord has opened my ears, and I have not been rebellious; I have not drawn back. I offered my back to those who beat me, my cheeks to those who pulled out my beard; I did not hide my face from mocking and spitting. Because the Sovereign Lord helps me, I will not be disgraced. Therefore have I set my face like flint, and I know I will not be put to shame. He who vindicates me is near. Who then will bring charges against me? Let us face each other! Who is my accuser? Let him confront me! It is the Sovereign Lord who helps me. Who is he that will condemn me? They will all wear out like a garment; the moths will eat them up. Who among you fears the Lord and obeys the word of his servant? Let him who walks in the dark, who has no light, trust in the name of the Lord and rely on his God.

James 2:1-5, 8-9

My brothers, as believers in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ, don’t show favoritism. Suppose a man comes into your meeting wearing a gold ring and fine clothes, and a poor man in shabby clothes also comes in. If you show special attention to the man wearing fine clothes and say, “Here’s a good seat for you,” but say to the poor man, “You stand there” or “Sit on the floor by my feet,” have you not discriminated among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts? Listen, my dear brothers: Has not God chosen those who are poor in the eyes of the world to be rich in faith and to inherit the kingdom he promised those who love him? …If you really keep the royal law found in Scripture, “Love your neighbor as yourself,” you are doing right. But if you show favoritism, you sin and are convicted by the law as lawbreakers.

That day the sermon also really touched me; I remember tears welling up in my eyes at one point…I can’t remember exactly what the sentiment was, but it definitely had to do with “the least of these.” I remember afterwards some of my church-going family making some comment on the unremarkableness of the message. I thought, Wow I almost balled, and I never go to church.

A couple weeks ago I went to an evangelical church for the sole purpose of seeing friends of mine play music. I came for the music and left immediately afterward, but it was so beautiful to see one friend in particular playing music again after a long time away from the art. It didn’t matter what style of music it was or what the setting was, it was such a joy to see him play, and my heart was so filled for love for him, as a person and as an artist…and that love fed back on itself and I was amazingly fulfilled by the experience. I did nothing more than stand there and watch him play.

In other news, our friend Matt was “busted” for drinking at our “what the fuck?” installation the other night. No it wasn’t the police that busted him, but he is only 19. Pictures on this very website incriminated him. To be honest, it never crossed my mind for one second. Not even one. I see a mature man in the company of trusted friends, family even, experiencing true life, exploring his beliefs, growing into a faith dependent not on what he has been told but based on faith alone, a faith that is not afraid to grapple with the difficult issues of life, issues that will never go away and sure as hell will not be explained or legalized away. A beer? “Who gives a fuck?!”

The coolest part of last Saturday night was when Matt looked over at me and said, “Why isn’t everyone doing this?” This being meaningful, authentic, spiritual moments woven into the very marrow of life. I just laughed.
You can’t put no band-aid on this cancer
Like a $20 bill for a topless dancer
You need questions forget about the answers
Do you really want to die this way?

That’s the trouble with you and me
We always hit the bottom ‘fore we get set free
I’m so far down

update, I promised somebody to get mp3's of the Americana EP up by today. Sorry. That's all I can say.
My digital contribution to WTF can now be viewed online. Two disclaimers: 1. Like this site, it displays adequately in IE, but looks better in more standards-compliant browser like Firebird/Mozilla. 2. There is a pr0n image used. Obviously the installation is not pr0n, and context being everything. But I still wanted to warn ya'll, not knowing who might stumble upon this space.

enter order :: disorder

update, from ben bubar:
...basically they (Scott & Daniel Miller) created an interactive buffet of different "stations" where you could participate...or not participate, it was up to you. They gave the night a theme, Order & Disorder, and then after a brief explanation set us loose. One station was an i-pod with specificly selected tracks for you to listen to, another station was a computer set up with an interactive type of slide show (i know that's a horrible description Daniel) but you can check it out for yourself over at Daniels Journey...it's quite thought provoking. There were 2 stations set up as "wall-paper," large sheets of paper covering the walls ceiling to floor and your job was to write whatever you wanted, whatever you were moved to write, or draw (preferably based on the various input that we had recieved that night). There was a station with a book, I can't remember the name of the book but I do remember picking it up and trying to read the first paragraph, key word: trying. It was way beyond my reading level, either that or it was part in a different language, I'm not sure. I guess they wanted to you read the first paragraph and then say, WTF? Then after everyone had gone through the stations we all played poker and hung out. It was a good night, a late night, thank god we turned our clocks back an hour. We all left saying "we should do this like once a month." Thank you Daniel and Scott for all the work you put into that night, it was great.

update2, big props to ellen for sending me a link to this cafepress store off of goingjesus.com...check out this shirt:

His "young Dylan-esq" voice has a warm feeling as if to say "hey, what I'm saying is important, so listen up"...

ben bubar (aka Neb Rabub)

I got the Americana EP from The Daniel Miller Band this past weekend, and it's quite impressive. I was hanging out with Dan (and Scott) saturday night at the Lion & Eagle when he sprung the cd on me. I've been very eager to listen to it since he'd blog'd about it a couple months ago. He couldn't have given it a better name, it sounds so American (think young Bob Dylan/Mark Knopfler/Tom Petty....something like that).

previously

I just wanted to blog about the rocking concert I went to tonight by the Daniel Miller Band. Two Over the Rhine covers (Latter Days and I Radio Heaven) and a lot of original stuff too. The band had a great groove, and the drummer played in his boxer shorts!

It awoke all my hibernating dreams of being a rock star.

ellen on the sarajevo show

...then I re-thought, "no obstacles? Then I wanna be a rockstar!" Yep, I really, really do. I wanna get up on a stage in leather pants and with my guitar and a cool band and rock out.

later ...shall i take responsibility?
</dc:description><dc:identifier>94</dc:identifier><dc:subject>Music</dc:subject>

<swim:publish>publish</swim:publish>

<dc:title>just keep singin'</dc:title><dc:description>
I want that partner to respect and admire me for who I am.
I want a partner that loves my art and my essentric [sic] genius.
Because I will love my partner that way. I will cherish her every gift, encourage her and aid her any way I can.

On the design:

Calling it "rotten tomatoes" or "everything but the kitchen sink" would be so cliché, so just don't.

Other names welcome.

It was inspired, to say the least. Very retro midwestern fall (as in the season), one I am enjoying, thank you very much. I wrote a friend in London today:
Being in Oklahoma has seriously inspired my asthetic. I started taking weird digital pictures two days ago and that night I just sat down at the computer and created a very new design for danielsjourney. Very not me, but at the same time...very american...

Of course all CSS.

Any help on getting it to look the way it is intended to in IE, thanks in advance.

To see it the way it was intended to look, use Firebird as your browser. You'll like it (the browser) better anyway. IE is a terrible browser and like most M$ products, behaves very badly.

You can also use the permalink page design by default, index.php (although this page <s>really</s> doesn't display correctly in IE). <s>On second thought, that's not such a good idea just yet. :P</s>

You are still free to set your own font in your own browser's settings. But I still suggest Verdana.

On the development:

Once again I have simply hacked together the pieces. I am actually writing this before I properly test the whole thing.

I redid the way the pages work, but reused much of the "old" code. Not really sure why I picked a new method of stringing the code together, I just did. Too much Cold Fusion work has influenced the way I work with PHP.

SWIM is still just the little blogging tool that could. I am still using MT as the front end. I am still making big plans for SWIM proper.

And the link field in my RSS is still broken. Sorry. Need to move back off of MT to fix it. Soon, soon, as always.

On the relaunch:

SO, this blog has been through a lot of changes already. A couple of sabbaticals. A couple structural changes. Many, many redesigns. But this is my first concerted change in the actual content of the blog.

Expect less quantitatively, more qualitatively. If it is or has been bounced around on another blog, don't expect to see it here. If it is just an off hand personal account, don't expect it to stand alone. If it is culture that you've already heard about, then consider yourself astute because I don't plan on commenting on anything more than remotely popular.

In other words, expect less frequent, longer entries falling into one of three categories: art reviews for indie artists, abstract photo pseudo installations, and a wildcard personal story slash abstract photo pseudo installation.

Oh, and announcements until I get a seperate announcements thing going.

Links sidebar as time allows. Gonna stop messing with this fucking entry and next time I won't publish until I'm good and finished.

That's the plan and I'm sticking to it. See you then next time the moment inspires.
