And I only save the best for you, oh dearest reader...

Recollection (on overshadowed)
It's compose of every single shot I took this month, put together in an edit to show what I've shot this month. I don't really know what I am trying to say with this, I guess it's like a recap of my month. So here's my November in 1 minute 30 seconds.
(see a list of amazing photog's here)

the girl worked on this amazing film last month. Here's the mov file.

diego isn't working on clevercactus anymore. somewhat disheartening, somewhat comforting in a sympathetic sense. successful people fail a lot. and they do it with grace. i remember when it was called spaces. i hope he can keep it somewhat alive.

bighappyfunhouse.com. found photos.

from my personal blog:
...Driving back home from some errands, the moon was big and sitting on top of the mountains, glowing down on their topography and up against the clouds. Never take the sight of snow-capped mountains for granted. I'd just lit a smoke and the air was cold coming through the crack in the window and "Live and Learn" by the Cardigans was playing and everything was just...good.
Live and Learn
I came home in the morning
and everything was gone
oh, what have I done!
I dropped dead in the hallway
cursing the dawn
oh come on sun, why must I burn?

I'm just trying to learn...

I stared into the light to kill some of my pain...
it was all in vain, 'cause no senses remained
but an ache in my body
and regret on my mind
but I'll be fine 'cause

I live and I learn
yes, I live and I learn
if you live you will learn
and I live and I learn

got kicked in the head
so I started a fight
'cause I knew I was right
but I learned I was wrong
I remember a slaughter
I remember I fought for the money I'd brought

I got blistered and burned
and lost what I'd earned
but I lived and I learned
yes, I lived and I learned
I've got, I've got it now!
(she's got, she's got it now!)

I came to on a corner, with some help from a man
and goddamn, I don't seem to have learned
that a lady in need is guilty indeed
so I paid and got laid in return

and I don't know what I've learned...

well, you get what you give
and hell yes, I lived!
but if you live as you learn
I don't think I can learn

oh, with the sun in my eyes, surprise!
I'm living a life...
cardigans country

If anyone can give me a good referral in the DFW metro area, I need the following: orthodontist, acupuncturist, and dermatologist. And some work so I can pay for these urgent health services would be nice too. Contact, resumé, and tip jar links can all be found in the sidebar.</dc:description><dc:identifier>30104035</dc:identifier><dc:subject>Elsewhere</dc:subject>

<swim:publish>stage</swim:publish>

<dc:title>it is all good. very very good.</dc:title><dc:description>This time I'm really disappearing. This time it's a promise. Every entry for the rest of the year will be about an exciting offering from the tangent universes of DJDC. And that's still a lot of posts. December is already almost booked solid.

We're on the verge of something big. I can feel it in every cell of my being. And in this final post before the swell, I'm asking one final time for your good vibes, your prayers, your positive thoughts in our direction. We need you to believe. Belief, hope, love; this is all we have.

These go out to me and everyone I'm interfacing with these days...and that includes you, dear reader:

Starsailor - Born Again
(Starsailor with Liam Gallagher)
But for the grace of God she'd cry herself to sleep.
Because the grace of God is something she can keep.

Oh it won't be long, until their hold is broken.
Oh it won't be long, until we've found our home.

It's for the good of you I sing sweet melody.
They'll cast the first stone when the last one's out of reach.

Oh it won't be long, their hold is broken.
Oh it won't be long, until we've found our home.

Forget where to begin.
Brother, I have not sinned.
I have not sinned.

But for the grace of God she'd cry herself to sleep.
But now the grace of God is the reason that she weeps.

Oh it won't be long, until their hold is broken.
Oh it won't be long, until we've found our home.

When summer comes, light my life, snow will melt away.
When summer comes, light my life, snow will melt away.

I was born again, I was born again.
Not into the world they put me in.
She was born again, she was born again.
Not into the world they put her in.
I was born again, I was born again.
Not into the world they put me in.
She was born again, she was born again.
Not into the world they put her in.

Buy "Silence is Easy" on Amazon.

The Polyphonic Spree -- Section 18 (Everything Starts at the Seam)

The Polyphonic Spree -- Section 19 (When the Fool Becomes a King)

I scoured the Interwebbie for the lyrics to these tunes, but alas... So listen to them!! Put these three tunes on repeat...you will be blessed.

And with that I will leave you with a quote from theyblinked:
...the distinction we're talking about here is the difference between buying a Van Gogh litho print and cutting off your own ear.
</dc:description><dc:identifier>22235616</dc:identifier><dc:subject>Minutia</dc:subject>

<swim:publish>stage</swim:publish>

<dc:title>Miracle Drug</dc:title><dc:description>

U2 - Miracle Drug
I want to trip inside your head
Spend the day there...
To hear the things you haven't said
And see what you might see

I want to hear you when you call
Do you feel anything at all?
I want to see your thoughts take shape
And walk right out

Freedom has a scent
Like the top of a new born baby's head

The songs are in your eyes
I see them when you smile
I've had enough I'm not giving up
On a miracle drug

Of science and the human heart
There is no limit
There is no failure here sweetheart
Just when you quit...

I am you and you are mine
Love makes nonsense of space
And time... will disappear
Love and logic keep us clear
Reason is on our side, love...

The songs are in your eyes
I see them when you smile
I've had enough of romantic love
I'd give it up, yeah, I'd give it up
For a miracle, a miracle drug, a miracle drug

God I need your help tonight

Beneath the noise
Below the din
I hear a voice
It's whispering
In science and in medicine
"I was a stranger
You took me in"

The songs are in your eyes
I see them when you smile
I've had enough of romantic love
I'd give it up, yeah, I'd give it up
For a miracle, miracle drug

Miracle, miracle drug
</dc:description><dc:identifier>21211255</dc:identifier><dc:subject>Music</dc:subject>

<swim:publish>stage</swim:publish>

<dc:title>this is one of the beauties of urban living, isn't it?</dc:title><dc:description>Kristen wrote Thursday about "an urban moment" with a (we presume) homeless person behind her house over in Lower Greenville. Thanks to my move one street over (from 4140 Commerce) to 830 Exposition and my friendship with Hal Samples, I have interfaced with a lot of homeless people; more or less on a daily basis.

The other day one of my "regulars" stopped by. He knocks on my door because he knows I'm cool with it and most of the time help him out in some way, mostly I've given him some warmer clothes since the temps started dropping. But he's been looking worse and worse as time has gone by the last couple months, and I began promising myself I was going to make him some food and ask him to tell me his story, and ask him what he was on. But this time he said he was just coming by to tell me that I wasn't going to see him again, because he had been accepted into a detox and rehabilitation program. He had the paperwork there to show me, and said it was something he should have done months ago. I tried to encourage him, offered him a ride to the center if he needed it (he said he'd take the bus). He thanked me for being his friend with tears in his eyes and asked me to give him "a good word, something from the Bible or whatever." I had never quoted the Bible to him before, I never even mentioned anything explicitly religious. I said, "I don't have many Bible verses memorized," and in the end just said, "Don't listen to the bad voices--the negative voices. You're a good man."

What I should have said was one of those few verses I do have memorized. It comes in handy most of the time. Romans 8:1:
There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
He never told me a "story," he just asked for help. I realized, analyzing my transactions with our local panhandlers, it is the same transaction I have with everyone: I respect and make time for authentics. I don't have respect or time for inauthenticity or personal bullshit narrative "selling." Just tell me you need help. Ask me for anything. My hands are open. Just don't take it.</dc:description><dc:identifier>20181356</dc:identifier><dc:subject>Minutia</dc:subject>

<swim:publish>stage</swim:publish>

<dc:title>regret</dc:title><dc:description>All relationships are just varying degrees of graciousness. Grace exchange if you will.

We may still have regret, but life is what it is. The best we can do is not have regret for our own decisions. But that is inevitable as well.

So for the past:

The Wild Colonials - Rainbow (4.8M mp3)
And for the future:

U2 - A Man and a Woman (5.2M mp3)

on this thread:

To say that writing a book is 'top-down' is just bad logic.

Ideas ARE free. However, as Kester pointed out, the time he took to compile TCC is not, nor is the ink and paper they are printed on, nor is the time of publishers, distributors, and retailers. Nor, for that matter, is webserver space, bandwidth, or the time spent in site administration.

These issues are more complex than can be assessed by a simple deconstruction of "he wrote a BOOK about bottom-up organization--har har!" and require a more nuanced and mature understanding of gift, commerce, and the relationship between the two.

...and as a continuation of this thread, where Kester inquires

What sort of forms do you think this could take? From what I've read of your blog there seeems to be stuff you're involved in that is hinting at exactly that. We at Vaux are really trying to tackle this very question, so be interested in any ideas...

I'm going to reply with several quotes from TCC and by narrating conflict--the conflicts that we have come out of and the conflicts we now find ourselves in. A more positive word would be 'challenges'...but I'm not feeling particularly positive ATM. First, the past:

Were we simply part of the 'service industry' that has grown up alongside the alternative worship movement, supplying liturgies and video loops and ambient sounds to furnish the spiritual bed-sits of those who wandered our way from the traditional?

People...spoke about 'enjoying' a time of worship and getting a lot out of it...Did they just mean they liked the songs and it made them feel warm inside? And were we just offering the same core product in a different style of packaging?

Is very much like what I was saying in '01:

Praise and worship music, even just by its intentions, is the most presumptuous and inauthentic art in existence today.

Kester says:

True art presents itself to us as a gift that can aid transformation, an antidote to the restless death of the commodity civilization; but it is a delicate gift, whose power can be destroyed very easily if it is turned into pure commodity.

...and contrasts this 'true art' to church worship by observing of the latter:

...it was judged on a subjective level by what people go out of it, not what they put in.

...and in reference to the xian culture's co-option of 'true art':

...as if it could be re-marketed and re-branded through some surface pick-and-mix of popular culture.

...and he envisions:

...one of the key places in a community where gifts can be exchanged and, as always when gifts are shared, relationships will flourish around these places. ...it could be 'messy' and that it may not always be clear who is in control--but we must remember that this is where life exists. We also know that accusations will come that activities like this are a 'waste of time' and not focused on the main goal of getting everyone saved.

All well and good? Of course Kester could have written an entire book taking Hyde's ideas about Gift and narrating he and his community's journey and challenges within the context of Gift, but I still would have appreciated some such context. And that is all I have to offer in response to his query about our efforts here Stateside.

My experience with these frustrations with worship-as-commerce, what I call the 'feed me' mentality of popular xian culture, is one of retreat. Seeing the abortion that is 99% of church experience in America and the dissonance it created in our hearts, many of us have simply left. We're still tacidly involved in some of the conversations, but mostly find them circular navel-gazing sessions.

So instead we went to where we were seeing 'authentic' gift exchange: the 'real' arts community. In my case, I started Integration Research, 'a cultural and technological incubator in the form of art collective, publisher and software developer.' I've also enacted my art within the context of 'typical' culture industries. But what I have found 'out here', in both my fellow exiles and those who have been here all along, is that many of the same problems exist.

The main problem is one not of, as Kester quotes Hyde, 'a work of art can survive without the market, but where there is no gift there is no art', but closer to what 'Welsh_Beard' quoted of Rabagliati in this thread, 'Where there is no money, there is no art'. Or what I think might be more accurate: Where there is no gift exchange there is no art.

In other words, the 'feed me' mentality persists (sometimes literally!). As evidenced in this thread, there is an inherit conflict between the two states of art as both gift and commodity, one Kester is experiencing through the publication of his work. And while the 'exchange' need not be monetary, there does need to be some balance. Kester points out Hyde's example of the Maori as a complex system, the 'circle of gift', and even earlier uses 'having people round for dinner' as example:

[gift] has created a momentum, a disequilibrium, and it would be expected - although never demanded - that the guest might in the future reciprocate the gift in some way.

This expectation comes from the need for balance; but what I have found is that as a generation (or two) into a gift-devoid society, we do not honor this requirement; we do not honor Gifts. They aren't gifts anymore, they are just free commodities. Our gifts quickly get degraded to the level of trade-show swag--grab as much as you can.

More later...maybe...let's see what gets thrown back at me for this.</dc:description><dc:identifier>16234201</dc:identifier><dc:subject>Comment</dc:subject>

<swim:publish>stage</swim:publish>

<dc:title>select * from cameraphoneimages order by location, date ascend</dc:title><dc:description>

Fall is my favorite season by far. I'm a cold-and-dark kinda guy, but do tend to run out of Vitamin D by the end of a long winter. But I like feeling cozy when it's good and crisp outside. I like huddling around a back table conversing with friends. All my social drinks, stouts and coffee, are winter drinks. I'm a night owl, so when it starts earlier I'm not sad at all. I'm not much for the heat or the beach or the sun. Must be my north European genetic code, fair skin and excess bodily hair.

I'm still freaked out by all the negativity in the comments of that Morning News article I pointed at Wednesday. I don't know how to rationalize all the hate in this world. I understand it psychologically, I just wish Love would overcome sometimes. I wish it weren't so true, and I wish I didn't fear them, and weren't troubled.

I'm entering a very busy, stressful, and hopefully ultimately rewarding time. I would love to be able to document it here, but chances are I won't have the time. I am asking for your good vibes. If I disappear I only need them more. And I'm not going to get around to the Complex Christ posts I promised (or that piece about contigency). Just read the book. If you are a Christian, then you must read it. ...So, some music:
"The Republican party -- the party of industrial mega-capitalists, corporate financiers, power brokers, and the moneyed elite -- would like to thank the undereducated rural poor, the struggling blue-collar workers in Middle America, and the God-fearing underpriviledged minorities who voted George W. Bush back into office," Karl Rove, senior advisor to Bush, told reporters at a press conference Monday. "You have selflessly sacrificed your well-being and voted against your own economic interest. For this, we humbly thank you."

Added Rove: "You have acted beyond the call of duty -- or, for that matter, good sense."

According to Rove, the Republicans found strong support in non-urban areas populated by the people who would have benefited most from the lower-income tax cuts and social-service programs championed by Kerry. Regardless of their own interests, these citizens turned out in record numbers to elect conservatives into office at all levels of the government.

"My family's been suffering ever since I lost my job at the screen-door factory, and I haven't seen a doctor for well on four years now," said father of four Buddy Kaldrin of Eerie, CO. "Shit, I don't even remember what a dentist's chair looks like... Basically, I'd give up if it weren't for God's grace. So it's good to know we have a president who cares about religion, too."
(via sotto)
"It is true that in the meantime we are suffering deeply in spirit, and incurring the horrors of a war and long oppressions of enormous public debt.
"If the game runs sometimes against us at home we must have patience till luck turns, and then we shall have an opportunity of winning back the

Hello all!

Did ya'll ever hear about Blogger? You can sign up in about a minute flat and have your own website/blog, onto which you can share your thoughts and experiences (like what this site is). The Homeless Guy is a really web-famous guy who was the first person to really use his own voice on the internet to create visibility for the homeless. Now I find there are many more, and there's always the NYU student who lived in the library. (All of a sudden I feel like Christian Slater at the end of Pump Up the Volume.)

Oh did we fail to mention that Dallas has been rated 15th meanest city in the USA in how we treat our homeless, and Texas the 5th meanest state?
Mayor Laura Miller said she was disappointed by the report.

"We couldn't be doing any more than we are right now to try to resolve the problem of homelessness," she said. "We've got a homeless czar working on it all day and all night."

Dallas...made it on the list for the first time because of ordinances banning panhandling, sleeping in public, obstructing sidewalks and loitering or loafing in public places. Rankings also were based on homeless people's experiences and input from local activists.
Going through the entirely unreasonable registration process is worth it to read the reader comments. Check out this gem of Bush territry bigotry:
If they want to mooch off of society, they should haul off and do it somewhere else! Social darwinism - survival of the fittest. These people's lives are of no contribution to society, but we keep them on life support so that they can deface our downtown by urinating, and doing other um, 'bathroom' functions IN THE STREETS and plantholders. I think we should come down harder! This study is just a bunch of babies whining because they think a government entity should embrace its lazy peons.
Crazy! You couldn't write better satire! Can you feel the Christian love? They get worse after that! And we wonder...

This morning, I went to Axxess and the message was on community. One of the bullet points was:
Throwing resources at the poor is not enough; we must invite them into our communities.
I have seen no better example of this than Hal's project, and it was embodied in last night's event.
He plans to use his participation in the Samples of Dallas series as a platform from which to begin a broader distribution of his poetry in self-published volumes. A master copy of his work is kept at city hall.

Part of Hal's project involves getting tools of expression into the hands of the homeless. Last night, besides being there as normal participants in the event, the homeless attendees filmed the activities, performed interviews, etc:

This guy sat right in front while we played the afterparty. Towards the end of our set, he said, "Thank you," in the most authentic voice I have ever heard in my life:

Hal speaks about his work and Bill Banks:

Bill's sister Sue speaks, leaving many of us in tears. The palpable power of the evening climaxed as she used a repetitive literary device:
He was a man. He was a human being.

daniel miller band performs:

Musicians and poets came up from Houston to participate in the event:

early on:

at the end of your rope:

<!--
// Math.round(
rand = Math.random()*1000;
n = 2;
setTimeout("rotateropeimages(i)",rand);
function rotateropeimages(i){
	if (n == 14) {
 n = 2;
	} else {
 n = n + 1;
	}
	file = "files/2004/11/rope/smaller/image" + n + ".jpg";
	//alert (file);
	document.ropeimage.src = file;
	rand = Math.random()*1000;
	setTimeout("rotateropeimages(n)",rand);
}

How ironic that an organization devoted to the development of artists would so blatantly infringe upon the copyright of another artist. He didn't want me to publicize the fact that he's coming, so I subliminated it. He just joked, "I won't tell my lawyers if Steve doesn't!" It was even funnier with the accent and everything.

Wait, this isn't some kind of passive-aggressive C&D is it?
I thought this email exchange might entertain some of you. I wish this person had registered over at i..r..org so we could have a discussion online about this issue. IP and copyright are such a mess right now, I think the best thing we can do is discuss it, open to subverts and sampling as well as to the possible need for more careful public use of © material. Of course I replied sarcastically, so I wasn't encouraging any discourse. But I also think it is pretty clear that our Fray Day 8 Dallas graphic a)an intentionally obvious play on the U2/iPod/iTunes adverts, b)not irreverently done, and c)not damaging to the brand or image of either U2 or Apple, if anything it enforces the brand and apotheosizes it.</dc:description><dc:identifier>05214145</dc:identifier><dc:subject>Minutia</dc:subject>

<swim:publish>stage</swim:publish>

<dc:title>samples of dallas</dc:title><dc:description>

Hal Samples unveils his newest photography project, Samples of Dallas, in honor of D. I am writing a follow up to this little bit of stream of consciousness. I'm not going to finish it for a while. Here is a high-level visual. If I ever get the piece done I'll move this image to the real post. This is in case I never do:

"Life is one big contingency."

I also have some posts about the complex christ planned and some other stuff too. But more important things beckon.

theyblinked: yeah, i am in a zen moment; accepting my fate.
Daniel Miller: yeah. my state is less zen and more chomping at the bit
</dc:description><dc:identifier>02104637</dc:identifier><dc:subject>Minutia</dc:subject>

<swim:publish>stage</swim:publish>
</rdf:RDF>
